How Dasuki Kicked Me Out of Jonathan’s Re-election Campaign – Doyin Okupe

Doyin Okupe, former senior special assistant to former President Goodluck Jonathan has revealed how he was schemed out of the presidential campaigns by Sambo Dasuki, former national security adviser (NSA).
Okupe alleged that the former NSA threatened to get he and Ahmed Gulak, also a former aide of Jonathan, out of the immediate past administration.
Okupe made the comment while reacting to claims that companies linked to him got some contracts from Dasuki. He said, ”Unknown to many Nigerians, and quite usual with politics at the top, for reasons not clearly defined, I never got along well with colonel Dasuki retired”.
”In fact, he twice told me to my face that he will get Alhaji Gulak and myself out of former president Jonathan’s administration. Colonel Dasuki would never have patronised me or any associate of mine. It was for this reason I was totally schemed out from the entire presidential campaign in 2015. Mr Ilan Salman is my friend and we did business together few years ago. But I have not had any business dealing with him since 2007 when he resigned his membership of the company we formed together.
”The name of his offshore company Romix Technology and the company we ran together Romix Soilfix International Limited, bear similar first names ‘Romix’. But that is where the similarities end. Mr Ilan apparently registered his new company, Romix Technologies after he resigned from Romix Soilfix International Limited in 2007. He probably used this name because we both loved the name ‘Romix’. Even when our South African partners from whom we derived the name Romix Soilfix broke up and told us to drop the name, we both flatly refused.
”It is for this reason that after Mr Ilan left the company, I also went ahead and registered two more companies named Romix farms limited and Romix homes limited. Romix Technologies is an offshore company registered in Cyprus. I am not the owner, I have no relationship with it neither do I have any financial interest. I had no knowledge of their bidding for contracts from the office of the National Security Adviser, I was not informed when they were awarded any contract neither was I in the know of what and when they were paid. I have not benefited financially from the proceeds of payment for the said contract neither can any money be traced to me, or any of my family members or associates.”

A’Court dismisses Arik’s N20bn libel suit against PUNCH

The Benin Division of the Court of Appeal has upheld the judgment of an Edo State High Court which on September 26, 2012 dismissed a N20bn libel suit filed against Punch Nigeria Limited, the publisher of The Punch newspapers, by Arik Air Nigeria Limited.
The appellate court, in a lead judgment by Justice Ugochukwu Ogakwu on November 25, 2015, affirmed the verdict of the lower court and dismissed Arik’s appeal “for lacking in substance or merit.”
The judgment was consented to by Justices Philomena Ekpe and Hamma Barka, who in turn affirmed the N50,000 cost imposed on Arik in favour of Punch Nigeria Limited.
The airline had in 2010 filed a suit numbered B/576/2010 against Punch Nigeria Limited, claiming that it was libeled through a story published in The Punch Newspapers’ edition of July 7, 2010.
Joined as the co-defendants in the suit were a former Editor of The PUNCH and now Controller, Publications, Mr. Adeyeye Joseph; and a former reporter with the newspaper, Akin Oyedele.
The PUNCH had, in the said story, reported that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission quizzed the Chairman of Arik Air Nigeria Limited over an alleged N10bn tax evasion covering the airline’s operations for the period between October 2006 and September 2009.
The story was, however, followed up with another on July 11, 2010, wherein the newspaper clarified that Arik’s Deputy Managing Director, rather than its Chairman, was quizzed by the EFCC over the alleged tax evasion story.
The airline had consequently headed for an Edo State High Court seeking damages in the sum of N20bn with an additional N100m as cost of filing the action.
Its counsel, Kenneth Omoruan, had urged the court to declare that the words contained in the publication by The PUNCH on June 7 and 11, 2010 were false, malicious and were intended to defame the person of his client before the public.
He claimed that the story was false and exaggerated as there were disparities between the amount involved and the member of the company quizzed by the EFCC.
He also sought an order of perpetual injunction restraining the newspaper from further publishing the stories.
But counsel for Punch Nigeria Limited, Dr. J.O. Odion, had urged the court to dismiss the suit for lacking in merit.
Odion had argued that the reports by The PUNCH were substantially true and was a fair report of the EFCC investigation into the activities of Arik.
The defence counsel maintained that the reports were accurate and published under qualified privilege and in line with the newspaper’s duty to inform and educate the public.
The lower court in its judgment on September 26, 2012 upheld Odion’s argument and dismissed Arik’s suit.
The court held that the reports byThe PUNCH were fair representation of the EFCC’s investigation into Arik’s operation, adding that the discrepancies between who was quizzed and the amount involved did not make the newspapers’ report inaccurate, libelous or defamatory.
The court held, “I need at this stage to specifically comment on the first report of July 7, 2010, which stated that PW1 was quizzed. The need to specifically consider that aspect of the reports is informed by the evidence before the court that PW1 was not quizzed but rather the plaintiff’s Deputy Managing Director, Chris Ndulue.
“The question which necessarily arises here is whether it makes any difference, so as to find the defendants liable, that it was the Deputy Managing Director and not the Chairman/Chief Executive as reported by the defendants that was quizzed? In my considered view, it matters not. It matters not because it is not the Chairman/Chief Executive that is complaining of libel but the company.
“That was why earlier in this judgment, I took time to draw a distinction between complaint of libel by the company and one by any of her functionaries. If, as I have found, there was investigation by the EFCC of an alleged tax evasion by the plaintiff and the defendants, in reporting that a functionary of the plaintiff was quizzed as a result of investigation, wrongly mentioned the name of one functionary instead of another, to me, it does not make the report less fair and accurate.
“To that extent, therefore, as long as there was investigation of tax evasion, the plaintiff cannot rightly complain over the report simply because it was some other of her functionary that was actually quizzed and not the one reported.”
The lower court therefore adjudged Arik’s suit to be unmeritorious and dismissed it. But displeased, the airline on December 12, 2012 headed for the appellate court seeking to upturn the judgment.
The appellate court, however, aligned itself with the lower court’s decision, dismissing Arik’s suit.
Justice Ogakwu held, “All the issues for determination in this appeal have been resolved against the appellant. This signifies that the appeal is devoid of merit. I so hold. The appeal is therefore dismissed.”

Beware Of IMF Visit, Ibrahim Warns Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has been warned to be wary of the current visit of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to Nigeria.
This warning came from Jimoh Ibrahim, the group managing director of Energy Group, Vanguard reports.
osinbajo buhari lagarde imf nigeria
President Muhammadu Buhari receiving IMF Managing Director, Christine Lagarde in Abuja.
Ibrahim said the visit of Christine Lagarde, the IMF’s managing director, is a means of campaigning for economic conditionalities, adding that her visit was an economic bait that will do Nigeria no good.
He accused the IMF of having a hidden agenda which only time will tell.
Ibrahim said: “I enjoin President Buhari to learn from Ibrahim Badamosi Babagida’s pitfall when he handed over the economy to IMF by taking specific loan only for the economy to be destroyed with IMF’s painful colonial conditionalities. The government of IBB was simply put to an end in economic terms by the Structural Adjustment Programme, an IMF baby which remains the foundation of Nigeria’s problem.
“For IMF to advise Nigeria not to be rigid in Economy Policy is an indirect way of asking for devaluation of naira and campaigning for ‘about to come’ IMF conditionalities, knowing very well that Nigeria may ask for assistance.”
He noted that the IMF boss did not say anything new saying ten things are likely to be the areas of advice of IMF which is already a stereotype.
They are usually Fiscal Policy, Reduction of Public Spending, Tax Reform, Interest Rate, Competitive Exchange Rate, Trade Liberalization, Encouragement of Foreign Direct Investment, Privatization of state enterprise, deregulation and legal security of property right.
“These ten-point agenda is not new to Nigeria. But the question we normally ask is whose interest? The optimum bias is playing clearly in her statement,” he stated.
According to him, Lagarde’s statement on the economy is traditional and full of strategic misrepresentation, advising the government to run away from such unsolicited advice.
He accused the IMF boss of strategic misrepresentation when she said oil does not contribute enormously to the GDP, knowing very well that the Nigeria budget is funded majorly through revenue from oil.
Ibrahim challenged the IMF to come with practical terms on how to help Nigeria solve its financial crisis by granting the country loans in liberal terms when the need arises or even if it is to develop infrastructure since Nigeria oil money has been used by IMF in the past to help other nations.
Lagarde arrived Nigeria on Monday and she held talks with President Buhari the next day. She had said contrary to widespread perception, she was not in Nigeria to negotiate a loan for the country. According to her, she discussed with Buhari on how Nigeria could face the challenges associated with global economic meltdown.
She met with members of the Nigerian Senate on Wednesday in Abuja. During her meeting with the Senate president, Bukola Saraki, she urged Nigeria to target the poor in its expenditure, especially fuel subsidy spending.

Stealing is in Every Kenyan's Blood - Zimbabwe President

President Robert Mugabe, 91, threw caution to the wind in his views about Kenyans who he described as highly unscrupulous people. According to Mugabe, Kenyans are the most arrogant thieves in the world because they steal with high degree impunity.
Those people of East Africa shock me with their wizardry in stealing. Sometimes I tend to believe that stealing is in every Kenyan’s blood. These people go to their schools and read good courses but they qualify as the best thieves. “You can even think that there is a subject in their universities called Bachelor of Stealing. Whenever they get an opportunity as employees, they never disappoint. They steal enough money to buy their freedom because even the judges who listen to their cases are financially powerless,” he said with vigor. “I urge you my people to be on high alert in case you by bad luck, happen to visit that East African nation. They might infect you with that disease and we don’t want it here. Zimbabweans are honest people who love their country and don’t want such stealing tendenciesm

Buhari To Reopen Cases Of Political Assassinations And Kidnappings

A statement by the President's Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina said that President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday promised that his administration will make sure that all cases of political assassination and kidnapping in the country are thoroughly investigated.

This  promise was made while addressing state chairmen of the All Progressives Congress who visited him at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Adesina said,
“I can confirm to you that the President did say during the closed-door meeting he had with the APC state chairmen that his administration will ensure that all cases of political assassination, intimidation and kidnapping in the country are thoroughly investigated to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. The President said the cases will be investigated irrespective of the perpetrators’ political affiliations.”

Buhari allegedly told the APC chiefs that he remained committed to providing a level playing field for all Nigerians to get on with their daily lives or participate in electing their leaders, without fear of intimidation.

He also promised that his administration would continuously strengthen Nigeria’s criminal justice system to curb the reign of injustice and impunity in the country.

According to the statement, the President said,
“At every point, the law must be supreme and everyone must respect the law, if our democratic system is to survive. Injustice cannot survive for long. Justice will ultimately prevail. We will make sure that those saddled with the responsibility of ensuring justice and equity do not rest on their oars. The only way we can sustain our democracy is to ensure that the law remains supreme at all times. If the law is upheld, people will have confidence that they can vote for who they want to vote for, without intimidation or threats.
“The police and the judiciary must ensure that justice is done in the country. We won’t allow impunity to continue in certain states, where the rights of the people are being violated. I have a personal commitment to fair play and respect of personal rights. This government will do all that is possible to enforce that.”

While recalling his address to the National Executive Council of the APC on Friday, Buhari said now that the APC is the party in government, it must lead by example and consolidate on the gains of a democratic system.

The President urged political leaders in the country to keep to prescribed legal processes for the resolution of political disputes and not resort to violence and other forms of unacceptable behaviour in seeking redress for any perceived injustice.

He also called on them to work with the party’s elected officials to ensure that APC delivers on its promise of better living conditions for all Nigerians.

The leader of the delegation and chairman of the APC in Kano State, Umar Dogowa, reaffirmed their support for Buhari’s administration, assuring him that they would uphold the values of the party, promote peace and unity in the country.

The president made this declaration because some of the chairmen in states controlled by other parties complained to Buhari of political intimidation and harassment in their states.

Dogowa later told State House correspondents that the APC chairmen were in the Presidential Villa to congratulate the President on his election.

He said Buhari promised them that he would continue to be a true party man and that he would not rest on his oars until Nigeria is back on track.
